A Domestic Violence Protective Order (DVPO), sometimes called a “50B Order,” is a court order designed to help protect survivors of domestic violence from further harm. A DVPO can place legal restrictions on an abuser, including ordering them to stop contacting, threatening, harassing, or coming near the survivor and their children.
A DVPO may also address important safety and stability concerns such as temporary child custody, possession of a shared home, access to personal belongings, and use of a vehicle. In some cases, the court may also order financial support. Without legal protection and advocacy, survivors can face increased risk of continued abuse, homelessness, or financial hardship.
Hotline Outer Banks advocates can help survivors understand the process, complete paperwork, develop a safety plan, and provide support during court hearings. While advocates cannot provide legal advice, they can help survivors navigate the system and connect them with additional legal resources when needed.
Walk-ins are welcome, but we ask that clients arrive by 2 PM to help ensure same-day completion and filing of paperwork with the court.
