Sexual Assault

Stay Safe.

Stay safe. Smart decisions can help protect your best memories.

Summer on the Outer Banks is meant to be enjoyed. Whether you're spending the day on the beach, meeting friends for dinner, or enjoying the nightlife, a little planning can help you have a fun and safe experience. Most evenings end exactly as they should...with laughter, great memories, and everyone arriving home safely. Making smart decisions isn't about expecting something bad to happen. It's about thinking ahead so you can focus on enjoying the moment.

Below are simple tips to help you think ahead, stay aware, and enjoy everything the Outer Banks has to offer.

  • Before you go...

    • Make sure you know the address of where you live or are staying.
    • Charge your phone before leaving.
    • Let someone know where you'll be.
    • Share your location with a trusted friend or family member
    • Plan how you'll get home before your evening begins.
    • Keep emergency contacts in your phone.
    • Carry only what you need and secure your valuables.
    • If you're with friends, make a plan to arrive together and leave together.

  • While you're out...

    • Stay present and aware so you can enjoy your night.
    • Stay with people you know and trust.
    • Keep an eye on your drink at all times.
    • If you leave your drink unattended, replace it.
    • Accept drinks only from the bartender or server, or watch them being prepared.
    • Be aware of your surroundings.
    • Know your limits if you choose to drink alcohol.
    • Trust your instincts.
    • If something feels wrong, leave.

  • Friends look out for friends...

One simple conversation can prevent a dangerous situation. Check in if a friend:
    • Suddenly seems uncomfortable.
    • Appears much more intoxicated than expected.
    • Is being pressured to leave with someone.
    • Becomes unusually quiet or withdrawn.
    • Seems confused or disoriented.
    • Stops answering texts or calls.
    • Don't be afraid to ask, "Are you okay?" Sometimes that's all it takes to let someone know they aren't alone.

  • Have a backup plan...

Even the best plans sometimes change. Having a backup plan before you go can help you make clear decisions under stress. Know what you'll do if:
    • Your ride falls through.
    • You become separated from your group.
    • Your phone battery dies.
    • You feel uncomfortable.
    • Someone won't take "no" for an answer.

  • Listen to your instincts...

    If something doesn't feel right:
    • Leave.
    • Find friends.
    • Go somewhere public.
    • Ask a bartender, server, hotel employee, or security officer for help.
    • Call someone you trust.
    • Call 911 if you're in immediate danger.

Remember, you never need to apologize for putting your safety first.
